Who would have thought that a simple brown egg would become the most famous figure on Instagram? This is not a surprise in a world where everything is possible. The whole thing started when model Kylie Jenner posted a picture that gained more than 18 million likes on the world’s most popular platform for sharing photos and videos; Instagram. This encouraged some enthusiastic people to declare a challenge. They would post a picture of an egg and hope that it will get more likes than Kylie’s picture.
Not only did the egg beat Kylie’s world record of 18 million likes, but it is also currently featuring more than 50 million likes with almost 9 million followers paying respects to the mighty egg.
Although this probably started as a joke, it raises real questions about the real influence of social media and the power of the masses. It also sends a strong message to Instagram celebrities and influencers.
Social media figures, celebrities, and influencers play an important role in changing society’s perception of what is acceptable and what is not. They engage in challenges and pranks and millions of children, teens, and even adults follow. Some of them actually don’t have much contribution except posting pictures and copying quotes that they didn’t even write, and still would make millions of dollars every year. So the egg picture might be teaching them a lesson as well.
I believe that as much fun as social media can be, it can also be extremely stressful. People are more interested in doing what they think is socially acceptable and desirable than what they actually like and want. So are we going to ditch our smartphones any time soon? I don’t think so. Still, we need to reconsider things that really matter in life.
